about edinburgh

Edinburgh is a remarkable city that combines majestic granite architecture, cultural dynamism and diversity and a rip roaring night life to make it one of Europe’s best spots to visit. Saturated with sublime bars and restaurants, this city swarms with activity all year round, especially during the world famous Edinburgh Arts Festival , which engulfs the Scottish capital in a cultural kaleidoscope every year during the month of August.

Edinburgh is located on east coast of Scotland on the south shore of the Firth of Forth which enters the North Sea. The city's rugged setting with its volcanic rock was probably what first attracted settlers here around 850BC. Today the majestic Edinburgh Castle is perched on this volcanic crag and overlooks the city.

Edinburgh is divided into two distinct area by Princes Street Gardens. To the north of this lies Princes Street and the New Town and to the south lies the city's Old Town with the famous Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle. The city's New and Old Town were given the title UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1995.

People flock from far and wide to enjoy the film, literature, comedy and fringe events that fall under the umbrella of the festival, with the beautiful scenery of Edinburgh Castle and the surrounding Pentland and Corstorphine Hills providing the perfect backdrop.

It’s a city that everyone really should make the effort to see at least once in their lifetime – with it’s abundance of museums, majestic monuments and buzzing bars and restaurants it really does have something for everyone. The local ‘Embra patter’ is legendary - one of the great things about the city is the sparkling wit and humour of it’s inhabitants, so be sure to make an effort to mix in the pubs and watering holes that define the city’s social fabric – you’ll be generously rewarded with fine memories!
