Originally built as a fruit and vegetable market in 1938, The Fruitmarket Gallery has been operating as a visual arts space since 1974.
You’ll be glad to hear that The Fruitmarket Gallery is a not-for-profit organisation. In fact it’s a Scottish Charity displaying national, international and touring exhibitions by leading artists and emerging talent.
The Fruitmarket Gallery brings artists and audiences together through exhibitions, commissions, interpretation, education and publishing. Various exhibitions can be held at one time and change throughout the year. Educational tours, which run through the work and ideas of the exhibits and artists, are provided.
The Fruitmarket Gallery runs Scotland’s leading contemporary culture bookshop. Stocking an excellent range of titles including artist monographs, group exhibition catalogues, children’s books, anthologies of new writing, architecture, art theory, poetry, politics and film titles.
Take a break in the gallerys café which offers freshly prepared dishes, home baked cakes and award winning specialty coffees. This is open seven days a week.
