The Tartan Weaving Mill

Edinburgh
The Tartan Weaving Mill was once the Castle Hill reservoir, the main water supply for the occupants of the Royal Mile. Now the historic building is fully converted into a five story working weaving mill, and provides the ultimate tourist experience.

Learn about the history of the Scottish Textiles here and one of its oldest fabrics the Falkirk Tartan, which dates to 250A.D, is also found here. The exhibit aims to show the whole process from shearing the sheep to making the kilts.

Visitors can see the mill in action and also the working looms. You can feel and touch the threads that are prepared for weaving and see the history of Highland dress through the ages. You can also be fitted and photographed wearing full Highland dress.

You can also buy a range of high quality Scottish merchandise including jewellery, scarves, kilts, rugs and woollens. The Mill is open daily all year round.
